Research has indicated that each component of effective reading instruction are critical. Successful teachers of beginning reading enables children to comprehend and produce written language, exposes them to a wide variety of texts to build their background knowledge and whet their appetite for more, generates enthusiasm and appreciation for reading and writing, and expertly teaches children how to decode, interpret, and spell new words from a foundation of linguistic awareness. The successful teacher adapts the pacing, content, and emphasis of instruction for individuals and groups. The teacher's choices are guided by knowledge of the critical skills and attitudes needed by students at each stage of reading development. Beginning reading skills are taught explicitly and systematically to children within an overall program of purposeful, engaging reading and writing.

Early Literacy: Preparing Young Children for Success in Reading is a 1 day training. Stoplight Phonics in Action is a  multi-sensory  early reading readiness kit, which has  been awarded the  2010 Mom's Choice Gold Award.  Developed with the whole child in mind,  the activities correlate with  Head  Start  Performance Standards, Texas  Education  Agency  Knowledge and Skills,  and  other national  learning  standards  from  various states. In  addition, it correlates with other state guidelines for early  reading literacy standards.  Stoplight Phonics is the new approach to  teaching phonemic awareness and phonics,  the first two essential  building blocks needed for children to begin Reading successfully.

Stoplight Phonics in Action brings  real world knowledge into the classroom  by  using a model  stoplight  to  assist children with directionality, segmentation, and letter-sound correspondence by mimicking what they are exposed to daily, stoplights.  Children learn in many different  ways and  no two children  learn in  exactly the same way.  The approach  is  multisensory in  that visual,  auditory,  and kinesthetic  modalities are utilized.  Stoplight  Phonics  is organized into weekly lessons for each letter of the alphabet. The sample lesson plan encompasses writing, reading and  center  activities to assist  teachers as they teach  children  to develop an  understanding of letter knowledge, language sounds, and concepts about print.

Stoplight Phonics in Action can be purchased with or without the professional development training by contacting Nikisha Jackson or visiting Amazon.com .  The professional development is a multi-sensory training. Participants will receive all resources needed to enter their classrooms with ready-to-use materials for small and whole group instruction.

Research indicates that intentional, explicit teaching of letter-sound correspondence, word patterns and word learning strategies can add words to students’ vocabularies and improve their ability to decode written text. Stoplight Phonics in Action is an interactive and synthetic method of teaching letter-sound correspondence.  The program uses a part/whole structure to help children blend words. Sequence is determined by directionality of word reading. When initial, medial, and final letters are together in sequence, words are formed.
